____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________        Ken Hampton,  President___________________Hal Spangenberg,  editor_________No 7_______________July  2010_____Join us for our July 13th meeting and GRAND OPENING of our new headquarters at530 ½  E. Florida Ave, Hemet. Meet at 5:30 for refreshments and share the evening with our candidates. Invited candidates are:  Steve Pougnet, 45th Congressional District; Pat Meagher, 41st Congressional District; Carl Wood, 65th Assembly District_________________________                                President’s Letter for July, 2010 Here we go into another election season! And, with a new headquarters to boot. Many, many thanks to Hal and Audrey and Kathy for all they have done in finding and securing this location. The new office is everything we could have hoped for. And, for those of us who spent many hot days at our 2008 campaign headquarters, it even has AIR CONDITIONING! The building is made up of a large entry room and several offices totaling 2400 square feet. It will allow all of our local candidates to have a base from which to operate in our area and allow us to see more of our candidates. We should be up and running soon. In the unfortunate news category, it looks as though Betty McMillion will no longer be the chair of the Riverside County Democratic Central Committee. As I am writing this, Betty is in seventh place, about 170 votes behind sixth place which would return her to the RCDCC. Betty has been a superb chair and her shoes will be nearly impossible for her successor to fill. She does say, however, that her kids are happy because they no longer need an appointment to see her! Betty will make her presence known on a regular basis at our new office. It can’t be election season in Riverside County without a controversy from the Registrar of Voters and we have a big one this year. As you have no doubt read, about 12,500 voters will not be counted this year because of a mix-up with the post office in Moreno Valley. There is an attorney from Los Angeles who is ready to file suit in an attempt to stop the certification of the vote until the issue is resolved and the Central Committee has agreed to pay the filing fee for the suit. It could and should be time for a new registrar. My idea for a new bumper sticker…

GRAND OPENING

GRAND OPENING of our Hemet Campaign Headquarters is scheduled for our meeting date, July 13. Note the different address. The office space near Ya-Ya’s just didn’t work out, so we found a better place.  FIVE offices, huge lobby and no work required for moving in, and for $1,000 a month rent.   In fact we have already begun moving in.  Marty Flores 925-4471 has volunteered to head up a committee to plan the refreshments for the opening. If you are interested in helping supply some refreshments, please call Marty.

Do you know your candidates?

Riverside County and the 65th Assembly District have great candidates who are getting ready for the November General Election.  Now is the time for us to host house parties, small get to gethers or what ever you want to call it. It is easy to do.  Just check with the candidates for a day or evening when they can come over to our area and agree on a date. Invite as many of your Democratic friends you can think of, for refreshments or whatever and more Democrats in this area will meet and talk to their candidate. It works. They go back and tell their friends about our great candidates and Democrats celebrate a victory and finally get some representation in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. Furniture needed

As of today, we have a couple of folding tables, and the promise of a wood desk to fill up the office. If you have office furniture you don’t need, or something you can loan to the Democratic Headquarters, it would be appreciated. Just give Marty Flores 744-4471; Hal Spangenberg 487-0325 or Ken Hampton 909-241-9188._________________________________________________Poor turnout for the June 8th primaryTotal no. registered in Riverside County: 818,289Vote by mail reporting turnout… 135,564  or 16.57%Precincts reporting turnout            105,655  or 12.91%Total:                                              241,219 or 29.48% Nonpartisan Registration   149,419 votersVote by Mail reporting turnout…..11,290 or 7.56l%Precincts reporting turnout               4,293 or 2.87%Total:                                                15,583 or 10.43 % Democratic Registration and Turnout      298,722Vote by Mail reporting turnout         45,658 or 15.28%Precincts reporting turnout                34,467 or 11.54%

Texas

At a time when Americans are looking for real solutions to the challenges we face, the Texas GOP decided to focus on propaganda, not policy: Below is a part of the Texas GOP Platform...."Homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases.""Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable 'alternative' lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should 'family' be redefined to include homosexual 'couples.'""We oppose the recognition of and granting of benefits to people who represent themselves as domestic partners without being legally married."The Republican Two Santa Claus Theory Just prior to Ronald Reagan becoming president a Republican operative espoused the Two Santa Claus theory. Thom Hartmann recently explained  it on his show . When the Republicans have control of the presidency and the House of Representatives they should cut taxes and spend big to run up the national debt. When the Democrats take control the money won’t be there for typical democratic social programs. The Democrats will be forced to raise taxes and limit spending. Once the Democrats are in control the Republicans should scream and shout – deficits, deficits! Since the House of Representatives originates spending bills control of this branch of government is critical to the Two Santa Claus theory. Both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush put the Two Santa Claus theory into practice. Reagan tripled the national debt and Bush doubled it. Clinton had a surplus.Voting The Republicans use God, guns and anti-gay slogans to get Republican voters to show up at the polls. Democrats don’t have a slogan to get Democratic voters to the polls. I would like to suggest one - Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Without a decent job, a home and a bright future you don’t have much of a life, little liberty or the means to pursue happiness.________________________________________________________Are you sure your vote counted?I’m sure that  we are all aware of the fiasco with the Registrar of voters and the reported 12,500 uncounted mail in ballots from the June 8th primary election. It was not just Moreno Valley that was affected.  The Moreno Valley Democratic Club is working hard to find an attorney that will represent them in a lawsuit to get those ballots counted. At last count there were  3500 uncounted from  Riverside,  1,000 uncounted from Menifee and 1,300 uncounted from Hemet.Nearly half of the uncounted ballots are from the 64th AD and the other half from the 65thADThe 12,500 uncounted ballots could affect the make up of the Central Committee. For more information on the count and the suit contact Ken Hampton..___________________Local HappeningsMonday July 5 at 5:00 PM, Grand opening of  S.W.
